The Village on the Cliff

Visit Sintra's beach page describes Praia das Azenhas do Mar as carved into the rock beneath a village built on the cliff, with natural pools fed by seawater at the bottom of the valley, and a small beach that forms from sand accumulation at certain tides. The official address is Escadinhas J. Ramos Baeta, 2705-101 Colares. This is why the place looks like the photo: the houses sit on the cliff and the water is directly below them.

The name appears in two forms on official pages, Azenhas do Mar for the village and Praia das Azenhas do Mar for the bathing water. Visit Sintra also lists the Miradouro das Azenhas do Mar separately as a viewpoint, which tells you the sight has two parts: the view from above and the pools at sea level.

What the name means is not stated in any source we cite on this page, so we leave the etymology out rather than guess.

Azenhas do Mar sits in the parish of Colares, a name better known for wine than for beaches. Visit Sintra's list of Colares wine producers includes Adega Beira Mar in Azenhas do Mar itself, and notes that the village held some of the oldest private cellars of Colares wine. How Long to Give It

No official source publishes a suggested visit duration for Azenhas do Mar. Our estimate is one to two hours for the viewpoint and a swim in season, more if you linger. It combines naturally with the coast itinerary that Visit Sintra itself suggests, which we cover in Where It Fits in a Sintra Day.

What the Official Record Says

Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1 of 30 April 2026, published in the Diário da República, fixes the 2026 bathing season for Sintra's six identified bathing waters, including Azenhas do Mar, as 30 May to 13 September. The Portaria qualifies Azenhas do Mar as a 'praia de banhos', which it defines as a beach where lifeguard assistance, the nadadores-salvadores, is ensured during that season. It also lists Azenhas do Mar in the column 'Praia de uso limitado', a limited-use beach. That is the same column where Adraga, Magoito and São Julião appear. Grande and Maçãs are not on it.

What this means in practice: from 30 May to 13 September 2026 you are swimming at a formally supervised bathing water. Outside those dates no lifeguard assistance is fixed, and the Portaria makes no promise for any other period.

Two more facts shape a swim here. First, Visit Sintra describes the water at the bottom of the valley as natural pools fed by seawater. Second, the sand beach only builds up at certain tides, and Visit Sintra publishes no tide times. So on some visits you will find a strip of sand, on others rock and pool only.

One warning from the same Portaria: it states that the APA, the Portuguese environment agency, publishes information before the season on bathing waters affected by the storms of the first months of 2026, which may have conditions restricting bathing at the start of the season. Check the APA notice before a May swim.

Outside the Season

From 14 September 2026 the fixed lifeguard assistance ends, and no official source states any supervision for the rest of the year. Visit Sintra does not publish a swimming-hazard list for this beach either. If you go in winter, treat the water as unsupervised Atlantic coast and act accordingly.

Where It Sits

Visit Sintra lists the Miradouro das Azenhas do Mar at Rua Doutor António Brandão de Vasconcelos / Escadinhas J. Ramos Baeta, 2705-101 Colares, with GPS 38°50'23.0"N 9°27'46.5"W. The description: a viewpoint built on the cliffs beside small houses edged in blue, built into the cliff rock, with the sea below against the rock wall.

Note the address: it shares Escadinhas J. Ramos Baeta with the beach listing, and Visit Sintra's two GPS points sit a few seconds of arc apart. No official source publishes the walk between them.

Visit Sintra publishes no opening hours or ticket for the viewpoint.

The Bus Lines

Carris Metropolitana's beach page for Area 1 lists lines 1242, 1247, 1248 and 1254 for Azenhas do Mar. Only line 1254 has a stop in the stop list that carries the village name: Parque de Campismo (Azenhas do Mar). The other three lines serve Azenhas do Mar per the beach page, but their published stop lists name Praia Maçãs (Mercado) or other stops, so check the exact boarding point in the operator's app before you go.

Fares are a known gap. Carris Metropolitana's fare page did not render as readable text in our check, so no euro figure is published here. The operator's fare structure is zone based.

The same line links the coast. In the operator's stop list, line 1254 also calls at Praia Grande and Praia Maçãs (Mercado) and ends at Magoito (Praia), so a two-beach day works on one line.

The Tram Gets You Close, Not There

The Eléctrico de Sintra, the historic tram, runs nearly 11 km from the Sintra side to its terminus at Praia das Maçãs, a journey of about 45 minutes according to the municipality. The terminus is Praia das Maçãs, not Azenhas do Mar. Tickets are always purchased on board, in cash, and the service is seasonal, with the timetable published as a separate document on the municipal site. From Praia das Maçãs, lines 1248 and 1254 both call at Praia Maçãs (Mercado).

By Car and Parking

Visit Sintra gives the road address but no itemised parking information for Azenhas do Mar. No official municipal or park page we checked names numbered parking lots at the individual Sintra beaches. We publish no parking facts we cannot source, so the bus is the plan we can stand behind.

The Official Coast Route

Visit Sintra's one-day itinerary 'De Sintra ao Litoral' (from Sintra to the coast) runs: the historic centre, the Eléctrico de Sintra, Praia das Maçãs, Azenhas do Mar, Adega Regional de Colares and MU.SA. That order matters. The tram carries you from the town to the coast, you see Praia das Maçãs and Azenhas do Mar in sequence, and then the wine village on the way back. In the tram's spring and summer season it works without a car: tram down, bus back.

The tourism board's three-day coast itinerary also places Praia das Azenhas do Mar on Day 1, between Cabo da Roca, the Convent of the Capuchos and Praia da Adraga. The wine routes section goes further and proposes two full day plans that include Azenhas do Mar: one pairing it with the PR8 vineyard trail, lunch at Praia das Maçãs and a tasting at Adega Viúva Gomes, and one starting at the Odrinhas archaeological museum with a tasting at Ramilo Wines. Each wine route asks you to contact the named producer in advance to book the visit and tasting.
