São Pedro de Sintra: The Fair, the Festas and the Trail to the Castle

The Former Parish of São Pedro de Penaferrim

São Pedro de Penaferrim was a civil parish of 26.97 km2 with 14,001 residents at the 2011 census, according to secondary sources. In 2013 it was merged into the União das freguesias de Sintra, together with Santa Maria e São Miguel and São Martinho. That is why you will meet two names.

The Visit Sintra listings and the fair use São Pedro de Sintra, while the merged parish name keeps Penaferrim. For a traveller this matters in one way only: search results, posters and trail signs may use either name, and they mean the same quarter.

Which Monuments Sit Inside It

Two of Sintra's headline monuments lie inside the former parish, Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, per secondary sources. That surprises visitors who assume everything on the hill belongs to the historic centre. The quarter's focal square is Praça D. Fernando II, which hosts the fair, the Festas and the medieval fair, and the Info Parques de Sintra point where the Santa Maria Trail starts is in São Pedro too.

What It Is and When It Runs

The Feira de São Pedro runs fortnightly in Praça D. Fernando II, on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month, per Visit Sintra. The market doubles as an antiques and vintage fair, so expect a mix of household stalls, collectors' tables and food. Secondary historical write-ups date the current fortnightly format to 1924, and note that the fair's roots go back centuries, though no single first-recorded date has been confirmed on an official page.

Its peak moment falls on 29 June, the feast of São Pedro, patron of the municipality.

How to Plan a Sunday Around It

Our suggestion is to treat the fair as the first stop of a Sunday, not the whole day. It fills a single square, so an hour or so covers it, and that figure is our estimate, not a published one. From the square you have two natural continuations.

Walk the Santa Maria Trail up to the Moorish Castle, which starts at Info Parques de Sintra in São Pedro, or head into Sintra village for the palaces. If you also want Pena that Sunday, book the palace slot ahead on Pena Palace tickets, because the fast-track lane has no delay tolerance. The Pena Park entrance ticket covers the park and the Chalet but not the palace interior.

What You Will Find on the Stalls

The sources describe the fair as a general market with an antiques and vintage component. Beyond that, the stall mix is not itemised anywhere official, so we will not invent a shopping list. What the sources do confirm is the square itself.

Visit Sintra describes Praça D. Fernando II as renovated at a cost of €680,000, and the same square hosts the Festas and the Medieval Fair. The sources give no opening or closing time for the fair, so if antiques are your reason for coming, arrive in the morning. Pair the morning with our things to do shortlist for the rest of the day.

The Three Marked Trails on the Hill

Parques de Sintra marks three official pedestrian trails up to the Moorish Castle, and each starts from a different point on the hill. The figures below come straight from the official how-to-get-there page, including lengths and walking times, so you can compare them at a glance before choosing. Private vehicles cannot reach the castle either way, since Parques de Sintra does not authorise car access, which makes these trails the most honest way up.

Tickets at the Top

The castle is ticketed, so plan the end of the walk as carefully as the walk itself. The Moorish Castle opens 09:30 to 18:00 with the last ticket at 17:30, and admission is $13.84 (€12) for adults, with a family ticket at $38.10 (€33). Dogs are allowed at the castle, one of only two Parques de Sintra sites that welcome them along with Monserrate Park.

If you want the castle and Pena together, the cheapest honest comparison is the official price table itself. The Pena Essential visit, park plus palace interior, costs $23.10 (€20), while the Park of Pena only, which includes the Chalet of the Countess of Edla grounds, costs $13.84 (€12). Our own pick for most visitors doing this trail is the castle ticket alone, because the trail plus ramparts already makes a full morning, and Pena deserves its own day with a fixed palace slot.

For the fastest way in, the Castle of the Moors skip-the-line ticket bundles entry with an audio guide and transport to the castle. Practical Notes for the Walk

The trail is graded at 1 hour for 1,770 m by Parques de Sintra. Wear proper shoes and carry water, and check the weather notice on the day, because Sintra's hilltop sites have closed at short notice for storms before. The start point, Info Parques de Sintra in São Pedro de Sintra, sits in the quarter itself, so you can combine the walk with the Sunday fair by starting from the square.

The Festas Programme

Secondary sources, the local events listing site Festas & Arraiais, report the Festas de São Pedro 2026 running from 19 to 29 June, centred on Largo D. Fernando II. Visit Sintra describes what the festas offer in their own words. There are tasquinhas, the small food stalls serving grilled sardines and sweets, crafts on sale, fairground rides and evening concerts.

If your trip overlaps late June, plan an evening in the square.

Why 29 June Matters

The municipal holiday of Sintra is 29 June, the feast of São Pedro. The Câmara Municipal's own account traces the choice to a Câmara meeting on 10 May 1951, which fixed the date precisely because it coincided with the annual São Pedro Fair, already a traditional celebration for the municipality. In 2026, 29 June falls on a Monday, per the Câmara.

The day's programme includes a performance by the Filarmónica Os Aliados band, Mass at the Church of São Pedro at 18:00, and the Solemn Procession of São Pedro at 19:00. It is a religious procession, not a show put on for visitors.

The Medieval Fair in July

After the Festas end, the square has one more event. Visit Sintra's own events listing reports a Feira Medieval de São Pedro for 11 to 14 July in Praça D. Fernando II, with costumed craftspeople, merchants and food and craft producers. The same Visit Sintra page confirms the regular fortnightly fair continues around it, on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Entry charges for these square events are not published in any source we hold, so treat them as free to enter unless signage says otherwise.

Taverna dos Trovadores

Taverna dos Trovadores sits at Praça Dom Fernando II 18, in the heart of São Pedro de Sintra, and it is listed on the government's Comércio com História register, which records long-standing businesses. The register states it opened in 1990, founded by the musician Fernando Pereira, starting as a bar and becoming a restaurant. Its signature is live Portuguese music every Friday and Saturday from 22:30.

Hours per the register are Monday to Thursday 12:00 to 23:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 02:00, and Sunday 12:00 to 16:00. Reservations go through reservas@tavernadostrovadores.pt or by phone. Our advice is simple.

If you are in São Pedro on a Friday or Saturday, book and stay for the music, because nothing else in the quarter runs that late.

What Else the Register Shows

We checked the Comércio com História register for the municipality, and it lists four establishments in total. Queijadas da Sapa, Piriquita and Café Elite all sit elsewhere in Sintra, near the historic centre and the station. The register lists no other São Pedro venue besides the tavern, which tells you the quarter's food scene beyond festas and fair days is thin.

The Road Rules on the Hill

Since around December 2019, the Calçada da Pena, the road up towards Pena, has been closed to general private-vehicle traffic and open only to authorised vehicles such as residents, emergency services and taxis. The municipality's stated reason was the inability to guarantee emergency access and the safety of traffic on the monument roads. On the same scheme, the Estrada dos Capuchos runs one way only, west to east, from the junction with the Estrada da Pena to the Chalet da Condessa d'Edla.

The practical upshot for São Pedro visitors is that you cannot drive to the Moorish Castle or Pena from any direction, and Parques de Sintra itself recommends pedestrian trails, public transport or peripheral car parks.

The March 2026 Experiment

In March 2026 the municipality ran an experimental traffic-restriction scheme covering the historic village centre, including the São Pedro de Penaferrim zone among others, limiting private-car circulation and pushing tourist coaches to peripheral lots. It ran from about 19 March to 6 April 2026. Whether the restriction continued, was extended or reverted afterwards is not confirmed by an official source in our pack, so treat any access rule tied to it as provisional and check the Câmara's notices before your trip.

Parking, and the Free Shuttle

For parking, the honest answer is split between official and reported figures. The municipality's official peripheral options are the Cavaleira lot, reported at more than 1,500 spaces at the time of the 2019 restriction, and the Portela de Sintra lot. A free shuttle connects the Portela de Sintra and Cavaleira parking areas to Sintra train station, with departures guaranteed every 7 minutes between 09:00 and 20:00, on a 24-seat wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

Separately, third-party sources report small commercial lots around Largo São Pedro Penaferrim charging a few euros an hour. These are commercial operators, not the municipality, and the figures are not confirmed by any official tariff page, so verify on site. Our pick is to park at a peripheral lot and take the shuttle, then walk the Santa Maria Trail from São Pedro.

The Case for the East Side

We do not name, count or price hotels on this site, but we can lay out the argument. The strongest reason to sleep in São Pedro is the Sunday fair, twice a month, and the trailhead, which puts the Moorish Castle a marked 1-hour walk away. The counterargument is eating and evening life, where the quarter has one registered venue and little else.

Our own preference is the east side for a second and third night, after the first night in the busier centre. Budget for the municipal tourist tax, which is $2.31 (€2) per guest per night at all tourist establishments and local-accommodation units, capped at 3 consecutive nights, with guests under 13 exempt.
