Sintra Travel Planning: The Decisions in the Order They Come
Sintra travel planning comes down to six decisions, and the first is a Pena palace slot that holds 25 fast-track places and forgives no lateness. The rest follow in order: how many days, which month, how to get there without a car, where to sleep and what the day costs. This page gives the fact that settles each one and indexes every planning page of the guide. The two ready-made plans are one day in Sintra and 2 days in Sintra, the sights are on the Sintra guide home, and ticket prices come from the Parques de Sintra price table.
Quick answer Days, tickets, transport, month, money, in five lines
Give Sintra two days if you can and one if you must. Book the Pena palace slot first: the Essential visit is $23.10 (€20), and the fast-track lane holds 25 places a slot with no delay tolerance. Come by CP train, return $5.88 (€5.10), because private cars cannot drive up to Pena or the Moorish Castle. One day of the four main sights costs $75.00 (€65) in adult entries by our sum.
Key takeaways
- Pick the length first with one day in Sintra or 2 days in Sintra.
- Then hold the palace hour on Pena Palace tickets, and the Regaleira slot after it.
- The train chain, the Navegante card and the bus gaps are on Lisbon to Sintra.
- If you would rather not plan it, the 8-hour tour from Lisbon covers Pena and Regaleira with two hours for lunch and free time.
How Many Days to Plan
Four trip lengths set against what fits and what the entry tickets add up to per adult, using the official Parques de Sintra price table and Quinta da Regaleira's own fee page. The visit lengths behind each row are our estimates.
| Days | What fits | What you skip | Entries per adult |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half day | Pena with the palace, then Quinta da Regaleira | The Moorish Castle, the National Palace, everything west | $46.10 (€40) |
| One day | Pena, the Moorish Castle, the National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira | Monserrate, the Capuchos, the coast | $75.00 (€65) |
| Two days | All of the above, then Monserrate, the Capuchos, Colares and Cabo da Roca | A day trip | $101.50 (€88) |
| Three days | Two days plus Queluz, Mafra, Cascais or the beaches | Little on this site |
The sums are ours: Pena Essential €20, Moorish Castle €12, National Palace Essential €13, Quinta da Regaleira €20, Monserrate €12 and Capuchos €11. The third day depends on the trip you add, so it carries no total. Children under 6 enter free everywhere on this list. Figures current for in Q3 2026.

Bookings That Simplify the Plan
Five ways to hand part of the planning to someone else. The 8-hour tour from Lisbon and the 9-hour small-group day include transport, and the 9-hour day swaps in Queluz Palace if Pena is closed, per its listing. The 4-hour small-group tour starts at Portela de Sintra station. The Pena Park entrance ticket covers the park and the Chalet but not the palace interior. The 9-hour coach tour adds Cabo da Roca and Cascais. On every tour, check which ticket option you are booking.

What to Book First
Three bookings, in this order, because each one constrains the next.
1. The Pena Palace Hour
Pena admits the palace by timed slot. A fast-track ticket reserves one of only 25 entries per palace slot and is valid only for that slot, and Parques de Sintra states there is no delay tolerance: if you are not at the Meeting Point next to the Palace of Pena store at the printed time, you cannot make the visit. The operator says to allow about 30 minutes from the park gate to that Meeting Point.
Fast-track tickets are sold on Blueticket, Headout, Tiqets and GetYourGuide. The park opens at 09:00 and the palace at 09:30, so the first palace hour sets the earliest possible day. The options are compared on Pena Palace tickets.
2. Quinta da Regaleira
Regaleira runs on its own operator and its own shop, regaleira.byblueticket.pt, with tickets that are personal and valid for one date and time slot. Its hours move with the season: 10:00 to 20:00 from May to September, 10:00 to 18:30 in February, March, April and October, and 10:00 to 17:30 from November to January. Pick the slot after the Pena hour, not before it.
Adult entry is $23.10 (€20) and the family package $69.20 (€60). The details are on Quinta da Regaleira tickets.
3. The Room, and the Rules That Protect You
Only then book a room, if you need one, on where to stay. Parques de Sintra online tickets require a date, and can be rescheduled on its website up to 18:00 the day before, within 365 days of purchase. Refunds apply only when an event is cancelled or a monument closes for extraordinary reasons.
Paper tickets bought at the office cannot be rescheduled. So buy online, and move the date the evening before if the forecast turns.
Which Month
No weather station sits in Sintra town, so the official numbers come from the coast.
The table compares five months from the IPMA 1991-2020 climate normals for the Cabo da Roca station, the nearest official station inside Sintra municipality. It is a coastal station, so read it as the coast rather than the palace hill, which the normals do not cover.
| Month | Mean high | Rain | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 14.3°C | 55.4 mm | 8.7 |
| April | 16.8°C | 41.1 mm | 6.3 |
| July | 20.9°C | 3.2 mm | 0.5 |
| October | 20.1°C | 69.5 mm | 8.0 |
| November | 17.1°C | 77.4 mm | 9.0 |
What the Calendar Adds
July is the driest month at the coast station and November the wettest, with 470.2 mm across 64.5 rain days in an average year. The Sintra tram to Praia das Maçãs runs only in spring and summer. Quinta da Regaleira stays open to 20:00 from May to September, and closes at 17:30 from November to January.
The Festival de Sintra ran its 60th edition from 11 to 21 June 2026, and 29 June is the municipal holiday, the feast of São Pedro. The Parques de Sintra monuments close on 24 and 25 December, from 13:00 on 31 December, and on 1 January. The month-by-month case is on best time to visit.
Getting There and Around
The train is the fixed part. The buses are the part nobody publishes properly.
The table compares the tickets a visitor meets between Lisbon and the Sintra hill, from CP's official price sheet in force since 1 January 2026, with the catch on each. Bus fares are missing because Scotturb publishes no readable fare page.
| Ticket | Price | Covers | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navegante card | $0.58 (€0.50) | The reusable card tickets load onto | One ticket type active at a time |
| Lisboa-Sintra return | $5.88 (€5.10) | CP train, both ways | A fixed fare, no discount beyond it |
| CP Tourist Card, 24 h | $7.73 (€6.70) | Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado lines | Trains only, not the buses |
| CP Tourist Card, 72 h | $16.61 (€14.40) | The same lines for three days | Exit only in the last 30 minutes |
| Train and bus, 1 day | $16.15 (€14) | Sintra line plus Scotturb 434 and 435 | CP says it is currently unavailable |
On the Hill
Calçada da Pena has been closed to general private traffic since around December 2019, and Parques de Sintra authorises no private vehicles to the Moorish Castle. From the station, Scotturb bus 434 runs through the historic centre to the Moorish Castle and Pena, and 435 towards Regaleira and Monserrate. Carris Metropolitana 1253 runs to Monserrate and 1624 along the coast via Cabo da Roca.
Drivers park at Portela de Sintra, capped at $2.08 (€1.80) a day, and take the free shuttle, every 7 minutes from 09:00 to 20:00. The stop-by-stop detail is on getting around, and the whole chain from Lisbon on Lisbon to Sintra.
Money, Passes and the Tourist Tax
Most visitors should buy single tickets, and the official arithmetic shows why.
Singles Against the Passes
Parques de Sintra sells two annual passes. The Friend's Card costs $103.80 (€90) an adult and covers seven sites. The six single adult Essential tickets it replaces, Pena, the Moorish Castle, Monserrate, the National Palace, the Capuchos and Queluz, add up to $93.40 (€81).
The Friendly Ticket for the 4 Parks costs $69.20 (€60), against $63.50 (€55) for Pena, the Moorish Castle, Monserrate and the Capuchos bought singly. Neither pass pays on one trip. They pay on a second visit within the year.
No separate city pass for Sintra was found on the municipal or Parques de Sintra sites. The full comparison is on tickets.
Families, Tax and Tips
Family tickets cover two adults and two youths: $75.00 (€65) at Pena and $69.20 (€60) at Quinta da Regaleira. Children under 6 enter free. A night in Sintra adds the municipal tourist tax of $2.31 (€2) per guest per night, for at most 3 nights, and guests under 13 are exempt.
Turismo de Portugal describes a restaurant tip of about 5 to 10 percent as customary. The day's full budget, at the live exchange rate, is on what Sintra costs.
Practical Details Before You Go
The small facts that save a phone call on the day.
Each line below comes from an official page: Visit Sintra's tourist offices, Turismo de Portugal's practical information, the hospital's own site and the Parques de Sintra terms.
- Tourist offices: Praça da República 23 in the historic centre, 10:00 to 18:30, and Sintra station, 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30. The Cabo da Roca office opens to 19:30 from May to September and 18:30 from October to April.
- Emergencies: 112 is free from any phone. The nearest major hospital is Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca, known as Amadora-Sintra, with a 24-hour emergency department.
- Power and time: 230 V, 50 Hz, Type C and F plugs. Portugal runs on UTC in winter and UTC+1 from late March to late October.
- Dogs: welcome only at the Moorish Castle and Monserrate Park among the Parques de Sintra sites.
- Food: the Parques de Sintra ticket terms forbid entering with food products, so lunch happens in town (where to eat).
- Works: Parques de Sintra lists restoration at Pena, the National Palace Royal Chapel to February 2028 and Monserrate to March 2027, with every site kept open.
What Goes Wrong, and the Fix
Six problems that recur in the official notices and rules, each with the fix.
None of these needs luck to avoid, only the fact in advance.
- Storm closures. On 16 December 2025 Parques de Sintra closed Pena, the Moorish Castle, Monserrate and the Capuchos the same day for strong winds, with no reopening date. Fix: check the notices that morning in autumn and winter, and keep the National Palace in town as plan B.
- A missed palace slot. There is no delay tolerance. Fix: be at the park gate 30 minutes before the slot, as Parques de Sintra advises.
- The lunch-hour counter. Offices at the National Palace, the Moorish Castle, Monserrate and Queluz close 12:00 to 13:00. Fix: buy online, or use the vending machines.
- Driving up the hill. Private cars cannot use Calçada da Pena. Fix: park at Portela de Sintra and take the shuttle and bus 434.
- A park-only ticket when you wanted the rooms. The Pena Park entrance ticket does not include the palace interior. Fix: book the Essential visit or a fast-track slot on Pena Palace tickets.
- A dead bus plan. Scotturb publishes no readable fare or timetable page for 434 and 435, and the combined train and bus ticket is unavailable. Fix: leave slack before any timed slot.

The official pricesSintra Travel Planning: Questions
How far ahead should I plan a Sintra trip?
Far enough to hold the Pena palace slot, because the fast-track lane has only 25 places a slot. Online tickets can be rescheduled up to 18:00 the day before, so booking early costs little flexibility. Start on Pena Palace tickets.
In what order should I book things for Sintra?
The Pena palace hour, then the Quinta da Regaleira slot after it, then a room if you are staying. The reasons are in what to book first, and the 8-hour tour from Lisbon replaces all three if you prefer.
Do I need a car to plan a trip to Sintra?
No. The CP train return from Lisbon is $5.88 (€5.10), and private cars cannot drive up to Pena or the Moorish Castle anyway. The bus and train facts are in getting there and around.
Is there a Sintra pass worth buying?
Not for one trip. The Friend's Card at $103.80 (€90) and the 4 Parks ticket at $69.20 (€60) both cost more than the single tickets they replace. The arithmetic is in money and passes.
What should I check on the morning of a Sintra visit?
The Parques de Sintra notices, because hilltop monuments can close for wind at short notice, as they did on 16 December 2025. Keep the National Palace in town as a fallback. More in what goes wrong.
Which month is best for planning a Sintra trip?
The coast station records July as the driest month and November as the wettest, and Regaleira's longest hours run May to September. The full comparison is on best time to visit.
Can I plan Sintra with a tour instead?
Yes. The 8-hour tour covers Pena and Regaleira from Lisbon, the 4-hour small-group tour starts at Portela de Sintra station, and every tour's ticket option must be checked before booking.
