The neoclassical Seteais Palace with its triumphal arch on the hillside road out of Sintra, Portugal

Seteais Palace

Seteais Palace is a late 18th-century palace on the road out of Sintra village towards Monserrate, and it has been a hotel since 1955. There is no admission ticket because nobody runs it as a museum. Non-guests can book the Marialva Restaurant, the bar, afternoon tea or a picnic experience, and anyone can start the marked Seteais Trail to the Moorish Castle, which begins at the palace. This page separates what the hotel actually publishes from what older guides still claim. For ticketed sightseeing on the same road, see Quinta da Regaleira, and the full list sits on Sintra palaces and castles.

Quick answer Hotel, not a museum. No ticket.

Seteais Palace has no admission ticket because it is a working hotel, now trading as Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais. The hotel publishes restaurant hours (breakfast 08:00-11:00, lunch 12:30-15:00, dinner 19:30-22:00), a bar open 11:00-00:00, afternoon tea 16:30-18:00 and a picnic experience at $167.30 (€145) per person. It publishes no public visiting hours and no garden or building visit for non-guests.

Key takeaways

  • Book the Marialva Restaurant or ask about afternoon tea on the hotel's own site. Spending money there is the only published way in for a non-guest.
  • The free, sourced thing anyone can do here is start the Seteais Trail on foot to the Moorish Castle, 2,410 metres, 1 h 30.
  • Older guides calling it Tivoli are out of date. The hotel now trades as Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais.
  • If you want to go inside a real palace, the Quinta da Regaleira skip-the-line ticket covers the estate further along the same road.
  • Bus 435 from the station passes the Seteais area on its way to Monserrate Palace.

Tours That Cover the Same Road

None of these tours enters Seteais Palace, because Seteais is a hotel and not a tour stop. The card below sells a skip-the-line ticket to Quinta da Regaleira, the estate further back along the same road out of Sintra, which is the closest match in spirit. The other cards cover Regaleira together with the historic centre, useful if you want a guided frame for the village you pass through on the way to Seteais.

What Seteais Palace Is

A palace that became a hotel, and the honest implications of that for visitors.

A Working Hotel, Not a Museum

Seteais Palace is a working hotel and has been one since 29 September 1955. You do not buy a ticket at the door, and there is no visitor route. The hotel is now marketed as Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais and trades at valverdepalacioseteais.com.

Many guides still call it Tivoli Palácio de Seteais. That name is gone. The old Minor and Tivoli Seteais pages on minorhotels.com answer with a page-removed message, so any advice built on those pages should be treated with suspicion.

What the hotel's own site publishes for non-guests is a restaurant with booking link, bar hours, an afternoon tea window and a picnic experience at $167.30 (€145) per person. What it does not publish is any garden or building visit for non-guests, any tea price, or any public visiting hours. In practice that means your access depends on spending money there, and walk-in touring of the rooms or gardens is never promised.

The Name and the UNESCO Landscape

The palace stands in the hills covered by the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 as the first European cultural landscape on the World Heritage List. The listing names sites including Pena, Monserrate, the Moorish Castle, the historic town centre and Quinta da Regaleira. Seteais itself is not named in the inscription, so the honest claim is that it sits within that landscape, not that UNESCO lists it.

The name Seteais comes with three legends told by the hotel itself. One says the Marquis hid seven servants in the gardens to repeat "ai" so guests heard a sevenfold echo. Another links it to a Moorish princess.

A third derives it from centeais, rye fields, a crop recorded here since 1500.

Seteais Palace in Seven Dates

The hotel's own history page is the source for the palace's story, and it differs from some older secondary accounts.

  1. 1787

    Gildemeester builds Quinta da Alegria

Daniel Gildemeester (1717-1793), a Dutch businessman and consul in Portugal, builds a house here to spend his last years in Sintra. He dies six years later.

  2. 1790

The Marquis of Marialva doubles the palace

    D. Diogo Vito, 5th Marquis of Marialva (1739-1803), doubles the building and adds the triumphal arch joining the two wings. The hotel calls this the golden period of Seteais.

  3. 1803

Forgotten for more than a century

From the Marquis's death the palace sits largely forgotten, in the hotel's own words.

  4. 1946

    The State acquires it

The Portuguese State buys the palace and it is classified a Property of Public Interest.

  5. 1955

    The hotel opens

Architect Raul Lino (1879-1974) converts the palace, and Hotel Palácio de Seteais opens on 29 September 1955.

  6. 1995

    UNESCO inscribes the landscape

The Cultural Landscape of Sintra is inscribed on the World Heritage List. Seteais is not named in the inscription summary, but it sits inside the hills it covers.

  7. Undated

    Pillement's wall paintings

The Noble Hall holds wall paintings by Jean Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808). The hotel gives no date for them.

Dates from the hotel's own history page, which is the source used throughout this page in preference to older secondary accounts.

What You Can Actually See and Do

Four realistic options, from free walking to the priciest published experience.

Start the Seteais Trail

Parques de Sintra marks a walking trail to the Moorish Castle that starts at the Palace of Seteais. It is 2,410 metres and budgeted at 1 h 30. This is the one free, clearly sourced activity here, open to anyone, guest or not.

It ends at a ticketed monument, so buy the castle entry before you set off or at its gate. Our Sintra hiking page covers the other two marked trails to the castle.

Book a Meal at the Marialva Restaurant

The restaurant serves breakfast 08:00-11:00, lunch 12:30-15:00 and dinner 19:30-22:00, with an online booking link on the hotel site and a Gourmet Tasting Menu among its menus. A table booking is the most concrete published way for a non-guest to spend time at the palace. Menu prices are not quoted here, so confirm them when you book.

Afternoon Tea or the Bar

Afternoon tea runs 16:30-18:00 and is booked by contact form. The hotel publishes no price for it. The bar opens 11:00 and closes at midnight.

Neither page promises walk-in access, so treat a bar drop-in as a maybe rather than a plan.

The Picnic Experience

The hotel sells a picnic experience at $167.30 (€145) per person. It is the only fully priced experience the site publishes for non-guests. The hotel site also sells staged visits to Pena Palace, but quotes no price for them.

For comparison, Parques de Sintra's own theatrical visit at Pena costs $109.60 (€95) for adults.

How Much Time To Give Seteais Palace

The hotel publishes no visit length, because it is not a visitor attraction. All figures below are our estimate.

Plan around the service you book. A restaurant lunch fits comfortably inside the 12:30-15:00 window. Afternoon tea fills nearly the whole published tea window.

The trail takes the official 1 h 30 and you should add time to reach the castle entrance afterwards.

RoutingTime on siteFits with
Lunch at the Marialva1 h 30 (our estimate)A full village day, see one day in Sintra
Afternoon tea1 h 30 inside the 16:30-18:00 window (our estimate)Monserrate in the morning, back down for tea
Seteais Trail start1 h 30 official walk, plus castle visitMoorish Castle ticket afterwards

Hours, Tickets and Works

The published service hours, and the honest gaps in what is published.

What Is and Is Not Published

The published hours are all food and beverage hours: Marialva Restaurant breakfast 08:00-11:00, lunch 12:30-15:00, dinner 19:30-22:00, bar 11:00-00:00, afternoon tea 16:30-18:00. There is no admission ticket to describe, because there is no museum visit. The hotel site does not publish any public visiting hours, any garden or building visit for non-guests, or any price for afternoon tea.

Never assume a walk-in can tour the rooms or the gardens. If seeing the inside matters to you, book a table or tea in advance and confirm access when booking. Weddings and other private events are listed by the hotel under private events, with no price published.

Getting There and Accessibility

The palace sits on the Monserrate road above the historic centre.

Bus 435 From the Station

Scotturb's bus 435 runs from Sintra station via Quinta da Regaleira and the Seteais area onwards to Monserrate. No official frequency or fare for it could be read on Scotturb's site, so check the timetable at the station on the day. The hotel's address is Rua Barbosa du Bocage 8.

Our getting around Sintra page shows how the 434, 435 and 1253 fit together.

Accessibility

The hotel publishes no accessibility statement on the pages checked, so wheelchair users should phone the hotel directly on +351 219 233 200 before planning a meal there. The Seteais Trail is a hill path and not a step-free route. For comparison, Parques de Sintra publishes detailed accessibility pages for its own monuments but none for Seteais, which it does not manage.

Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know About Seteais Palace

Facts with sources, several of them corrections to common assumptions.

  • The hotel was opened as Hotel Palácio de Seteais on 29 September 1955, after architect Raul Lino converted the state-owned palace. (Valverde Palácio de Seteais, History & Culture page)
  • The triumphal arch joining the two wings was added by the 5th Marquis of Marialva, D. Diogo Vito (1739-1803), who doubled the size of the building. (Valverde Palácio de Seteais, History & Culture page)
  • The palace was forgotten between 1803 and 1946, when the Portuguese State acquired it and classified it a Property of Public Interest. (Valverde Palácio de Seteais, History & Culture page)
  • The old Tivoli branding is gone. The hotel now trades as Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, and the former Seteais pages on minorhotels.com return a page-removed message. (valverdepalacioseteais.com, and minorhotels.com page removed)
  • One name legend says the Marquis of Marialva hid seven servants in the gardens so his guests heard "ai" echo seven times. Others credit a Moorish princess, or centeais, the rye fields recorded here since 1500. (Valverde Palácio de Seteais, History & Culture page)
  • Parques de Sintra's marked Seteais Trail to the Moorish Castle starts at the Palace of Seteais and runs 2,410 metres, budgeted at 1 h 30. (Parques de Sintra, how to get there)

Do and Do Not at Seteais Palace

Simple rules for visiting a palace that is somebody's hotel.

Do

  • Book the Marialva Restaurant online in advance for lunch 12:30-15:00 or dinner 19:30-22:00.
  • Phone the hotel on +351 219 233 200 before planning afternoon tea, since the price is not published.
  • Walk the Seteais Trail to the Moorish Castle if you want the free option, allowing the official 1 h 30.
  • Catch bus 435 from the station if you do not want the uphill walk.
  • Read the hotel's own history page before you go. It explains the arch and the name in a few minutes.

Don't

  • Don't expect a ticket office, there is no admission ticket because this is a hotel.
  • Don't trust guides still calling it Tivoli Palácio de Seteais, the operator has changed.
  • Don't assume you can wander the gardens or public rooms as a walk-in, the hotel publishes no such right.
  • Don't arrive at 17:30 hoping for tea, the window is 16:30-18:00.
  • Don't confuse the hotel's staged Pena visits with Parques de Sintra's own theatrical visit at Pena, priced at $109.60 (€95) adult.

Seteais Palace Questions

Can you visit Seteais Palace without staying at the hotel?

Not as a sightseer. There is no visitor route, no ticket and no published garden or building visit for non-guests. Your realistic access is through spending money: a meal at the Marialva Restaurant, a drink at the bar, afternoon tea or the picnic experience at $167.30 (€145) per person. Book ahead, since the hotel publishes no walk-in guarantee for any of them. For real palace touring nearby, Quinta da Regaleira is ticketed and open to all.

Is there a ticket for Seteais Palace?

No. Seteais Palace is a working hotel, so there is no admission ticket of any kind. Sites listing Seteais tickets are describing hotel services, not entry. The closest things to tickets the hotel sells are its food and experience bookings, and its staged visits to Pena Palace, for which no price is published. Parques de Sintra's nearby monuments all have normal tickets, covered on our tickets page.

Can non-guests have afternoon tea at Seteais?

The hotel publishes an afternoon tea service running 16:30-18:00, booked through a contact form, and nothing on the page restricts it to guests. However the price is not published, and the site does not state walk-in availability, so contact the hotel before you plan the afternoon around it. Phone +351 219 233 200. Treat tea as bookable in principle and confirm everything at booking.

Is Seteais still a Tivoli hotel?

No. The hotel now trades as Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, run by Valverde Hotels at valverdepalacioseteais.com. The old Minor and Tivoli Seteais pages on minorhotels.com answer with a page-removed message. Any guide, price or phone number sourced from Tivoli-era pages should be treated as out of date, including older mentions of the hotel's own services.

What is the history of Seteais Palace?

In 1787 Daniel Gildemeester (1717-1793), Dutch consul, built his Quinta da Alegria on the site. The 5th Marquis of Marialva, D. Diogo Vito (1739-1803), doubled the building and added the triumphal arch joining the two wings. After 1803 it was forgotten until the Portuguese State acquired it in 1946, classifying it a Property of Public Interest. Architect Raul Lino converted it into a hotel, which opened on 29 September 1955. The Noble Hall has wall paintings by Jean Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808).

How do I get to Seteais from Sintra station?

Take Scotturb's bus 435, which runs from the station via Quinta da Regaleira and the Seteais area on its way to Monserrate. No frequency or fare is published on the operator's readable pages, so check at the station. The hotel is at Rua Barbosa du Bocage 8. See getting around Sintra for how the bus lines connect.

Does Seteais Palace host weddings, and what do they cost?

The hotel lists weddings under its private events. It publishes no price, no package and no capacity figure on its pages, so everything depends on a direct enquiry. Phone +351 219 233 200 or use the contact routes on the hotel's own site. We print no wedding figures because none are stated. For staying the night instead, see where to stay in Sintra.

Where Seteais Palace Fits in a Sintra Day

Seteais works best as a meal stop or a trailhead, not as a destination in itself. One pattern that works is to arrive at Sintra station, ride bus 435 up the Monserrate road, and spend the morning at Monserrate Palace or Quinta da Regaleira. Come back down for lunch at the Marialva inside the 12:30-15:00 window, then either take afternoon tea at 16:30 or start the Seteais Trail for the official 1 h 30 climb to the Moorish Castle.

If you have never booked a Sintra monument ticket before, start with the Quinta da Regaleira skip-the-line ticket and read our one day in Sintra route, or spread it out over two days. The rest of the trip is laid out on the Sintra city guide. Staying overnight?

Our where to stay page covers the neighbourhoods, and where to eat covers cheaper options than a palace hotel.
