Sintra Tickets: Two Operators, One Timed Palace and the Passes That Do Not Pay

Sintra tickets come from two operators. Parques de Sintra sells seven sites, from Pena Palace at $23.10 (€20) to the Convent of the Capuchos at $12.69 (€11), on one shop with one set of rules. Quinta da Regaleira, also $23.10 (€20) for an adult, sells through its own shop with rules of its own. This hub puts every ticket beside its hours, compares the three that people book most against the platform cards, and works out the two things most buyers get wrong: the discount for buying several sites in one purchase, and the annual passes that do not pay on a single trip. The detail for the two big sights is on Pena Palace tickets and Quinta da Regaleira tickets, and the trip as a whole starts on the guide to Sintra, Portugal.

Quick answer What to book ahead, where to buy and whether a pass pays

Book Pena ahead: its ticket carries a palace time with no delay tolerance, and the fast-track lane holds 25 places a slot. Buy the other Parques de Sintra sites in the same online purchase for 5% to 10% off, and buy Regaleira on its own shop, where slots have a 1-hour grace. No annual pass pays for itself on one visit.

Is There a Sintra Pass Worth Buying?

Parques de Sintra sells two annual passes. No official Sintra city pass covering both operators turned up on the municipality's or the operators' sites.

Both passes are annual and personal, sold only at the staffed ticket offices, and neither covers Quinta da Regaleira. The comparison below sets each pass against the single adult tickets for the same sites, using the official price table. The single-ticket totals are our sums.

OptionAdult priceSitesVerdict
Sintra Friend's Card$103.80 (€90)Pena, Edla, Monserrate, Queluz, National Palace, Moorish Castle, CapuchosPays only on a second visit
Six single tickets for the same paid sites$93.40 (€81), our sumPena, Moorish Castle, Monserrate, National Palace, Capuchos, QueluzCheaper on one trip

Four single tickets for the same paid sites$63.50 (€55), our sumPena, Moorish Castle, Monserrate, CapuchosCheaper on one trip

The singles win before the multi-site discount, and the discount widens the gap. The passes also do not buy a Pena palace time: holders go to the ticket office first, and entry to the palace depends on the slots available. Junior and senior Friend's Cards are $92.30 (€80), and the family card is $328.80 (€285).

The passes make sense for people who live near Sintra or come back within the year.

The Multi-Site Discount Most Buyers Miss

The Parques de Sintra FAQ gives a discount for buying tickets to several of its sites in the same purchase, and it can be combined with other discounts.

The discount rises with the number of sites in one basket. It applies only across Parques de Sintra sites, so Regaleira cannot be added to it.

A worked case: Pena Essential at $23.10 (€20), the Moorish Castle at $13.84 (€12) and Monserrate at $13.84 (€12) come to our sum $50.80 (€44) before the discount. Three sites in one purchase take 6% off, applied by the shop at checkout. The practical rule is to decide the whole Parques de Sintra part of your trip before you buy anything, then buy it once.

Online tickets can still be moved until 18:00 the day before, so fixing the plan early costs little.

Discounts from the Parques de Sintra FAQ.

Two Operators, Two Rule Books

Most confusion about Sintra tickets comes from assuming Pena and Regaleira work the same way. They do not, and the table sets the rules side by side from each operator's own pages.

Read the late-arrival row first. It decides which ticket you book first on a day that includes both.

Who Pays Less, Operator by Operator

Both operators have youth, senior and family prices, but the free categories are very different.

At the Parques de Sintra Sites

Youths 6-17 and seniors 65+ pay less at every site, for example $11.54 (€10) instead of $13.84 (€12) at the Moorish Castle, and children under 6 are free. Family tickets cover two adults and two youths. Disabled visitors pay half at Pena, the castle, Monserrate and Queluz, and 70% less at the Capuchos and the National Palace, with the companion free.

Residents of Portugal enter free on Sundays and national public holidays, but only at staffed ticket offices, with a Citizen Card or ID and a residence certificate.

At Quinta da Regaleira

Youths and seniors pay $17.31 (€15) against the adult $23.10 (€20), and a family of two adults and two youths pays $69.20 (€60). A disabled visitor and one companion pay $13.84 (€12) each. Entry is free for children up to 5, for residents of the Municipality of Sintra with proof of tax domicile, and for listed tourism professionals.

The Parques de Sintra free Sunday does not apply here.

If You Miss a Slot

What happens depends entirely on which operator sold the ticket.

  • Pena Palace: the ticket time is the palace interior entry, with no delay tolerance. A missed time cannot be changed or refunded on the day. Parques de Sintra says to allow about 30 minutes from the park gate to the palace.
  • Other Parques de Sintra sites: the ticket carries a date, not a time, so the risk is missing the last admission, which is 17:30 at the Moorish Castle.
  • Quinta da Regaleira: up to 1 hour of grace after the ticket time, within the 17:30 last entrance.
  • Plans changing a day ahead: move a Parques de Sintra online ticket until 18:00 the day before, and a Regaleira ticket up to 24 hours before.

If the Pena times you want are gone, the park-only ticket still gets you onto the hill, and the castle next door has no time at all. The tour that includes Pena entry, the small-group day from Lisbon, substitutes Queluz Palace if Pena is closed. The Pena-specific options are on Pena Palace tickets.

Closed Days and Weather Closures

Two short calendars, and one warning about the weather on the hill.

Parques de Sintra closes its sites on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January. Quinta da Regaleira closes on 1 January and on 24, 25 and 31 December. Parques de Sintra also warns that sites can close for State events, for fire risk in the forest, or for extreme weather.

In one closure notice for strong winds it shut the Moorish Castle, Pena, Monserrate and the Capuchos on the same day. A weather closure is one of the few cases where a Parques de Sintra ticket is refunded. When the best time to visit falls in autumn or winter, check the operator's site on the morning.

Sintra Tickets: Questions

Should I buy Sintra tickets in advance?

For Pena, yes: the palace ticket carries a time with no delay tolerance, and Parques de Sintra recommends buying online to avoid the ticket office queue. Regaleira also recommends its official online shop. The Moorish Castle and the other dated tickets are less pressing. Start with Pena Palace tickets.

How do I buy tickets for Sintra?

Parques de Sintra tickets are sold on its website, at ticket offices and at machines at the entrances. Quinta da Regaleira names regaleira.byblueticket.pt as its only authorised online shop. The two cannot be bought together, as the rules section shows.

What do tickets for a full day in Sintra add up to?

Pena Essential, the Moorish Castle and Quinta da Regaleira come to our sum $60.00 (€52) for an adult, before the two-site discount on the Parques de Sintra part. Add the train and food on what Sintra costs.

Can you see Sintra without tickets?

Yes, partly. The town is free to walk, the garden of the National Palace is free, Villa Sassetti is free, and the Cabo da Roca viewpoint costs nothing. The walks are on Sintra Village.

Is there a combined ticket for Sintra?

There is no single ticket covering both operators. Parques de Sintra gives 5% to 10% off several of its sites in one purchase and sells two annual passes, which only pay on a second visit. The numbers are in the passes section.

Can one ticket get me into both Pena and Regaleira?

No. They are run by different operators and sold on different shops. The half-day small-group tour from Sintra visits both in one booking, if you want someone else to handle the two.

Start With the Hill Ticket That Has No Time Slot

The Pena park ticket gets you onto the hill and into the Chalet of the Countess of Edla with an audio tour. It does not include the palace interior, which is a separate official ticket with a fixed time.
