Óbidos From Sintra: The Oeste Line Bus, the Walls and a Day Plan

The routes below combine CP's Oeste line timetable, in force from 19 July, the Rodoviária do Oeste express timetable and the Óbidos tourism office's directions. None of them publishes a Sintra to Óbidos journey as one trip.

The Oeste Line Is a Bus for Now

The Oeste line branches off the Sintra line at Mira Sintra-Meleças, a few stations east of Sintra. On CP's regional timetable every service between Meleças and Caldas da Rainha, including every call at Óbidos, is marked TR, Transbordo Rodoviário, a replacement bus. The journey from Meleças to Óbidos takes about 2 hours 10 minutes and calls at Sabugo, Mafra, Malveira, Torres Vedras and Bombarral on the way.

CP's legend says trains and buses wait for each other at connections under normal operating conditions. The timetable does not show the fare or where the replacement bus stops in Óbidos, and the town puts its railway station about 1 km from the historic centre.

Via Lisbon Campo Grande

Óbidos's own tourism office names Rodoviária do Oeste as the bus operator, with daily connections from Lisbon and a stop about 100 metres from the historic centre. The operator's express timetable, in force from 1 October 2025, times Lisboa (Campo Grande) to Bombarral at 45 minutes and Bombarral to Óbidos at 15, so about an hour in all, with working-day departures from Campo Grande from 07:00, then 08:00, 09:00, 10:00 and on through the day. Weekends have their own table.

Tickets are sold on board, at Rodoviária do Oeste offices or in the MOOV-U app, and children under 4 travel free. Getting from Sintra to Campo Grande means crossing Lisbon first, covered on the Lisbon to Sintra page in reverse.

Driving and Parking

The tourism office's directions from the south are the A8 motorway northbound to exit 15 for Óbidos, and it puts the town about 80 km north of Lisbon. It publishes no distance from Sintra. Parking is in marked lots outside the historic centre, with paid parking near the tourist office and by the aqueduct, run by the local fire brigade.

The walled town is not a place to drive into. Taxis wait at the entrance to the Vila around the clock.

The Walls

Turismo Centro de Portugal, the regional tourism board, describes the walls around the citadel as giving 2 km of walking with views over the town and the country around. You can get up onto them at the start or the end of your walk, at the Porta da Vila or at the castle, and go all the way round. No official page we read prints opening hours or a price for the walls.

The Porta da Vila and Rua Direita

The Porta da Vila is the main gate into the town, with an oratory and a covered balcony lined with an 18th-century azulejo panel showing the Passion of Christ. From it, Rua Direita runs through the town to the castle, the street where most of Óbidos happens. The tourist office is at Rua Porta da Vila, open every day from 09:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30, and it is where the guided walk meets.

Igreja de Santa Maria and the Aqueduct

On the main square stands the Igreja de Santa Maria, the town's principal church, where King Afonso V married his cousin Isabel on 15 August 1444, when they were 10 and 8. In front of it is the Fonte da Vila, the fountain at the end of the aqueduct, which carried water over 3 km of arches across vineyards and fields.

The Castle and the Literary Town

The castle at the top of Rua Direita is now a state pousada in a historic building, so it is a hotel rather than a monument with a ticket. The town was part of the patrimony of the Queens of Portugal through several dynasties. Since 2015 Óbidos has been a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, and its network of bookshops and other literary spaces is reported to number around 11.

Its year runs to events the municipality lists: the Mercado Medieval, the International Chocolate Festival, Holy Week, the Opera Festival, the FOLIO literary festival and Óbidos Vila Natal at Christmas.

Two hours is enough for the walls and Rua Direita, but that makes 4 hours 20 minutes on the bus for 2 hours in town. The five-hour plan is the one to aim for. People also ask whether Sintra or Óbidos is better.

They are not alternatives from a Sintra base: Sintra is palaces and forest a short walk away, Óbidos is a single walled town that costs you most of a day in transport. If you are travelling north through Portugal anyway, visit Óbidos on the way instead of as a return trip. The two-day itinerary keeps both Sintra days in Sintra.

Óbidos works best as the first stop on the way north, not as a return trip from Sintra. If you are moving on towards Coimbra or Porto, take your bag on the Oeste line replacement bus and continue from Caldas da Rainha. If you are staying in Sintra and still want it, give it a whole weekday, leave Meleças at 09:05 and come back at 16:29, and keep the Sintra days for the palaces in the two-day itinerary.
